The Importance of Radon InSpections

As a homeowner, you may have heard about radon and its dangerous effects. But if you’re like many homeowners, you may not understand exactly what radon is, why and where it exists, and how it affects you. The truth is radon is found in every state with radon levels varying significantly from region to region within each state.  The only way to know if your home/property has unsafe radon levels is by conducting a professional radon inspection.  Before you do, check out these answers to some basic questions about radon:

What is radon?

Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring, radioactive, inert gas that you cannot see, smell or taste. It is produced by decaying uranium and moves freely through the air we breathe, groundwater and surface water, and natural gas and is found in almost all kinds of soil.

Why should I be concerned?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that higher than acceptable concentration levels of radon (over 4 pCi/L -pico curies per liter) are found in over 6 million homes in the United States; so you are right to be concerned but not panicked.  Radon levels vary widely among people living in the same area--it depends mostly on how your home functions on your soil.

How does radon in my home affect me and my family?

Radon that enters your home (through pipes, cracks in concrete, gaps in walls, or via gas appliances) gets trapped and can lead to higher than acceptable levels that acummulate over an extended period of time and can result in lung cancer.  Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer overall.  The EPA estimates that radon is responsible for about 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States.  In South Central PA, the radon levels are among the highest in the state. What does that mean? Any home testing over the action level will need a mitigation system installed.

What can I do to protect my family for the future?

A prudent and timely radon inspection by a qualified professional is the answer.  In the State of Pennsylvania, only a PA DEP-certified professional may perform radon testing. Here at Rife Home Inspections, LLC, we use a continuous radon monitor method that provides quick results to test for the presence of radon. Stop worrying and start testing.
